If you don’t find a certain someone below, try previous section devoted to ancestors.
My Grandfather Thomas Patrick Wallace’s GrandfatherThomas got us started in the New World. My GrandfatherTam himself got us started in Nova Scotia. Grandpa Howie got us started in Halifax then Ottawa, with thanks to Grandma Caroline.
Section 1 of this Catalogue dealt briefly with our immediate three generations and sundry connections and disconnections. Section 2 sketched some of those who preceded us, going back to 1814 at least for our first Wallace settler and further back to the 18th century for ancestors of another migrant family making up our whole. Now in Section 3 we turn more to siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews and beyond. Entries are limited roughly to those whom one or other of our nuclear family has encountered. We also recall those who have died among us and deserve our recognition of their contribution, however brief. Here are kin fanned out in Europe and American states as well as the breadth and depth of Canada. The sturdier ribs of our fan, however, rise out of th olde colony/dominion/province of Newfoundland and from colonies/provinces of Nova Scotia, Ontario, and British Columbia.

I love to go to this church – it is so beautiful. It is old and yet has retained its character throughout its history. When I am in that church I feel the spirit of the Carews. They walked along the same floors, knelt at the same pews, heard the music of the same great organ, were Baptised, made their first Communion, were married and were buried from a place where now their grandson, their nephew offers Mass and attends to the duties of a pastor.” Father Basil has retired, doing chaplain’s work on occasion down there.

George Carson Murray (1906-62) was husband of my beautiful cousin Nonie Wallace. I remember a gentleman who drove my mother Rita and us children home from some inter-family occasion Down East. He was editor and publisher of the Pictou Advocate, respect-ed Bluenose weekly but died before his time. The Advocate joined George Cadogan’s chain of community papers. Son Sean Murray continued as editor in Pictou into 2001 and beyond. Canada has at least 1,100 community papers including a couple of hundred French and 40 or so bilinguals. Sean was recently president of the national community newspaper association. Vernon Oikle, editor of the Bridgewater Bulletin in Nova Scotia and a past president of the Atlantic body, says our weeklies with their cherished local content convey “both the good and the bad things about where we live.” A reminder from Sean – each is a paper of record, an archive, genealogical resource and positive commun-ity builder. I escorted members of the previous weeklies association to visit our military installations with NATO in Germany and France. I was impressed to see that editors made two or three available of an afternoon so a steady trickle of our army and air force men and women could catch up on what was happening back home in Smalltown Canada.

Mark wrote Glo continues to use Mrs. Garvey for business purposes. “Her legal name is Hanington, but nobody knows it and I have learned to an-swer politely when called ‘Mr. Garvey’”. Thanks to her contribution towards battleship USS Missouri being made part of Pearl Harbor’s warship memorial, a plaque naming our Rear-Admiral Daniel Hanington DSC, RCN who died 6 Jan. ‘99 will be displayed on board. I watched the Mighty Mo doing 30 knots, shipping green ones on a mammoth NATO exercise North Atlantic decades ago, her outline less and less cluttered as hundreds of tons of mid-ocean water swept fittings off her flush deck.

From Howard Carew: “We had word from Anne Carew-Hallisey that my next older sister Isabel Roxane Wallace died 13 Jan. 2014 in Halifax, N.S. and was buried in the Carew family plot in Mount Olive cemetery. Searching the name Roxanne, dad writes that it recalls Alexander the Great’s policy of marrying queenly girls to firm up a conquered country like the area that became Afghanistan. One researcher says that Roxanne was no queen, rather an inn-keeper’s daughter. Either way sounds practical for a campaigner! (HCW 2 Nov 2014). See also Carew Family Plot.
