Bard’s Toast : 22 August, 2015
Dear Clan, honoured guests, and our newlyweds,
Today, two families are joined together as one to celebrate a marriage… and to marvel once again at this power we call love. I’ll speak to both.
In other times, partners would have been chosen through intermediaries. Parents and agents would have cataloged potential mates, offering union as a possibility and much less choice. Many Canadians families were founded this way, a tradition that continues, though less from expediency than it once was.
Intimate support is at the heart of marriage. Though, love still carries plenty of mystery:
– Maslow’s hierarchy came out in the 1940’s, but even Abraham himself admitted in the 1970’s that he had no way of testing his theory. Is marriage a meeting of needs? No doubt, it is.
– Steven Reiss questioned tens of thousands of people and explains that there are 16 basic desires that influence our choices. Desires aren’t moral codes; they simply describe how people are made. Having similar desires tends to bring people together.
– Though, we also know that opposites attract. So, why is that? I suppose this is so that we don’t end up marrying a copy of ourselves. What use would that be?
– In us all of us, there are masculine and feminine energies. The masculine energy seeks freedom and release. It’s through this release, by way of having a purpose to transcend, that fear is faced. The feminine energy seeks connection, for the depth of the feminine is like the vast oceans—a timeless force that represents mankind’s essence. These two energies have as destination the unifying power of love.
– In the end, it’s Attachment that drives us into each other’s arms. By answering the questions, “Are you there? Are you with me? We avoid loneliness. Love is simply a desire to make another happy. No price to be paid, no conditions to be met, just giving. It’s by the very act of projecting our love upon the world that we receive it abundantly in return.
It was John Donne who said it best, “No man is an island entire of itself; every person is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” It’s true.
The idea that we live confined in our own bodies and minds is an inadequate way to describe our existence as sentient beings.
No. It’s more that we exist, not solely inside ourselves, but also amongst others; each of us keeping a copy of cherished ones tucked away in our recesses, perhaps in our hearts, safe, secure and lasting. This is appropriate because our Caroline represents an aspect at the very heart of our clan: She is a symbol for love.
You’ll have no trouble appreciating how the Universal Force of Love means that we reverberate in those around us. And those before us exist like endless echoes inside of us, down through the ages. It also means… we are always together.
So allow me to propose a grand toast and blessing to your love:
Let us remember you first with gratitude in our prayers.
Now, invoking all the power of the sword… and the lightness of a feather:
Knowing your traditions and the lands of antiquity from whence you came; having the blessings of your children, your parents, and forefathers; of your friends and families, gathered here and those from afar; and with the consent of the Supreme Intelligence, under all the stars of the Universe:
May you both live well, may your families live well, may your establishments grow well, may the country live well and may your World live in Peace and in Harmony!
God Bless you. Cheers to the bride and groom!
