Should a Boy Love his Father

Dad and me pic 22mar2013

Should a boy love his father, there are those who do
Life’s travails between them, circumstance be cruel
At least one part is true, and for this there is a need
No matter what be grateful, and thank him for his seed

My father was a fearsome man, at time he was so too
Who could let you know with just one look, that that was not to do
But other times he was patient, and showed a different slant
At four it counted most for me, like when I shit my pants

Another time he rescued me, when during a charity stalk
I rode up a hill by bunking, but having disembarked
At sight of him waiting, with coats for us going by
Landing bloodied at his feet, swoops me up, no mention of my ride

Another time I found myself, sitting outside the office bench
I’d run afoul of Principal, who much preferred the French
My dad arrived unexpectedly, this time in full naval uniform
With a curt hello to me, but inside my guts were torn

But the office doors soon closed, and with dad now in charge
Things got worse from where I sat, I imagined my shame writ large
This principal had taught me before, but not my brothers or sister
I don’t know what dear dad said to him, but after he called me mister

As I have aged I watched, as part of me turned into him
I think nothing of spewing facts I’ve read, as if just on a whim
But it’s his honesty I sought the most, and there he’s without peer
So if it’s real he says it is, if not it’s said without fear

Oh sure he has a different side, one that brings caution to bear
For he’s a force to be reckoned with, with plenty left to tear
But his five sons are grateful to him, for guiding them as men
If I had to choose a father once more, he’d be my choice again

Should a man know his father, and this is one who does
Respect is more sought after, than the uncertainty of love
But all you have taught me, for that I say it’s true
This boy loves his father, and I feel loved by you.

Happy Birthday Dad
